Monica Romaina Brito, whose indigenous Shipibo name is ‘Sanken Mea’, in fact, aptly means “beautiful design “. Having been raised within the Shipibo tribal community, she has been healed by, and educated in the medicinal use of the surrounding Amazonian flora, and vegetation and apprenticed in the heritage and skills of textile art. Her grandparents and parents, highly adept in many aspects of natural healing and indigenous arts, have guided and empowered her towards her own aspirations and artistic expression of her own life experiences and spiritual journeys. Working with great technical knowledge and dexterity, Rich, complex, and textural interpretations are brought to life upon the fabric. Each individual piece can take hundreds of hours to fully complete, making each tapestry a significant endeavor.
