The Paiche, also known as the Arapaima, is a revered fish native to the Amazon basin. It is considered a symbol of unity in Peru and grows to be one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. Arapaima has mythical connections to the ancient chiefs of the Amazon, and is considered the reincarnation of the chief’s cast-down son. Reborn to be the King of the River, the artist has expressed through this piece the sensual nature of this magical creature and its importance within the river ecosystem.
